It’s hard to think about it, but behind all of Randy Travis’ hit songs, awards and movies is just a regular 56-year-old man looking to get his life back. As you may recall, Randy was recovering from congestive heart failure caused by a viral cardiomyopathy three years ago when he suffered a stroke. Ever since then, Randy has been stripped of his abilities to walk or even speak.
A man who once was the voice of country music had been silenced, until now.
While he is still far from being back to the man we remember, the singer is making tremendous strides. “He can talk … say words, but no sentences,” explained his friend Chuck Lipps in a recent interview published in the Parkersburg News and Sentinel. “He is alert and knew me.”
In addition to finding his voice, he’s begun to find the use of his legs as well. According to the article, the singer is well enough to walk a lap around the house without the help of his wife. After spending the day with his good friend, Lipps has high hopes for the singer who has brought us such favorites as “Forever and Ever Amen,” “Three Wooden Crosses” and “I Told You So.”.
“I think Randy will make a total recovery,” Lipps said. “It was an amazing day. I am proud of him. He is lucky to be alive.”
