Months after she hit the road with her son and daughter-in-law, “Miss Norma,” of “Driving Miss Norma,” celebrated one year on the road.
Not long after her husband died and she was informed she was ill, Miss Norma decided to go on a road trip that has been well documented on Facebook.
Norma found out that she had a likely cancerous mass on her uterus. Doctors wanted to start radiation, Norma said “no.”
“A tiny woman at 101 pounds and under five-feet tall, an exhausted Norma looked the young doctor dead in the eye and with the strongest voice she could muster, said, “I’m 90-years-old, I’m hitting the road,” Norma’s team wrote in 2015.
For the last year, fans have tuned in to see where Miss Norma is and to see how she is doing. Despite a grim diagnosis in 2015, Miss Norma has traveled the country, which often stops people from thinking of her health.
In a recent post to her page, Miss Norma’s caretakers gave her fans the unfortunate news that she was not well.
“We have been slowly coming to terms with the fact that our grand adventure with Miss Norma may be coming to a close,” Norma’s caretakers wrote.
“Her health is beginning to decline and we have been trying to figure out how to tell the whole world.”
According to her caretakers, Miss Norma and family are currently in Washington state, and the beloved woman is being cared for by hospice nurses.
“We have now arrived at the difficult portion of our undertaking. It is sometimes ugly, messy and hard,” Norma’s caretakers wrote on Facebook.
“Norma’s needs have increased and we have enlisted the support of a wonderful hospice team to help us. Miss Norma continues to amaze us with her spirit and every few days is interested in an “outing” of some sort. Who knows? Soon, maybe we will be changing the perception of hospice care, too.”
