On Friday, Sept. 9, country superstar Kenny Chesney returned to his roots in East Tennessee.
There, he performed in front of thousands of screaming University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech football fans at NASCAR racetrack Bristol Motor Speedway as part of a build up to the “Battle at Bristol.”
“I’m telling you guys today while I’ve been here I’ve gotten goose bumps,” Kenny told the audience. “It’s really unbelievable to think that I’m back in an area in front of a lot of people that grew up just like I did, where you have certain things as a community that you leaned on. For me, it was school. It was church. It was friends. It was sports. And, that’s all we had.”
Kenny then busted out his spirited sports anthem, “The Boys of Fall.” But, it was near the end of the song that things got really crazy. Kenny invited current Super Bowl champion and former UT Volunteers quarterback Peyton Manning to the stage. And, the crowd went nuts!
Peyton assisted his buddy in selecting a lucky fan from the audience to give away a signed, acoustic guitar. And, they chose 11-year-old Justin from Blountville.
“I went home and I took pictures with it and stuff,” Justin tells WATE-TV, admitting that he still needs to learn how to play the instrument.
This certainly isn’t the first time that Peyton and Kenny have teamed up onstage. In fact, their brotherly bond runs deep. Back in 2003, the friends sang “Back Where I Come From” as a duet at UT’s Neyland Stadium.
