In the sixth Democratic debate, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders battled over the U.S. aiding regime change in the Middle East:

Sanders has criticized Clinton, who served as Secretary of State under President Barack Obama for four years, for being “too much into regime change.” Sanders has firmly stood against systematic regime change, saying that the point is not to “overthrow a terrible dictator, it’s to understand what happens the day after.”

Clinton’s campaign fired back against Sanders’ criticism, where he again reminded viewers of the debate that he voted against the Iraq war in 2002, while Clinton voted for the war, which eventually took out Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein. A statement released by the Clinton campaign said that in 1998, “Sanders voted to reaffirm that the policy of the United States towards Saddam Hussein should be regime change.”
