Halloween is supposed to be the one time where people can dress up as anything other than themselves.

So, it makes perfect sense to go out and find a costume that not only contrasts your personality, but also your looks. Well — that is unless you’re Jason Aldean.

Back in 2015, the 39-year-old country superstar dealt with some extreme criticism over the look that he wore on Halloween. Jason donned “blackface,” which, according to his representative, was supposed to depict rapper Lil Wayne.

Photos of the “Lights Come On” singer popped up online showing Jason sporting a red handkerchief, dreadlocks, sunglasses and dark makeup. You can see the photo here.

Now, Jason is opening up for the first time about the controversial outfit that has haunted him to this day. And, he’s saying sorry.

In an interview with Billboard Jason said, “In this day and age people are so sensitive that no matter what you do, somebody is going to make a big deal out of it. Me doing that had zero malicious intent.”

Jason exclaimed that he stumbled across the costume at a store and wanted to have a fun night out with friends where he could go unrecognized. So, he had his wife, Brittany Kerr, paint his face to hide who he was in public.

“I get that race is a touchy subject, but not everybody is that way,” said Jason, “Media tends to make a big deal out of things. If that was disrespectful to anyone, I by all means apologize. That was never my intention. It never crossed my mind.”

Currently, Jason is on the road playing dates for his Six String Circus Tour with supporting acts Thomas Rhett and A Thousand Horses. In addition to that, he just dropped his brand-new album, “They Don’t Know.”
