The developing dialogue surrounding race and comedy has been, in a word, divisive. Most recently, Saturday Night Live’s hiring of African-American comedienne Sasheer Zamata has been criticized by some for focusing on quota over talent.

In an interview with BuzzFeed, funnyman Jerry Seinfeld, whose popular sitcom Seinfeld was sometimes accused of its exclusive portrayal of “white people problems,” commented on this conversation.

“People think it’s the census or something,” Seinfeld said.

“This has gotta represent the actual pie chart of America? Who cares? Funny is the world that I live in. You’re funny, I’m interested. You’re not funny, I’m not interested. I have no interest in gender or race or anything like that.”
