More and more young women are waiting until they’ve made their own way in the world before settling down, getting married and starting a family. So for most people it wasn’t unusual at all that “American Idol” superstar Kelly Clarkson waited until she was 31 years old to tie the knot. But to her Texas hometown, it was nearly scandalous.

Kelly told People, “I’m from a small town in the South. Everyone thought I was gay cause I wasn’t married with kids already! And I was like, ‘That’s kind of insulting to the gay community!’ But, especially in this day and age, I had a very high bar.”

Waiting to marry is one of the reasons that Kelly believes her marriage to Brandon Blackstock has been so successful and happy.

The now 34-year-old adds, “You change so much in your 20s. I mean, my husband got married at 21 in his first marriage, and they both went, ‘What?!’ It can be very hard to grow in the same way. Your 20s are all about growth and giant mistakes.”

Kelly and Brandon have been married since 2013 and have a blended family that includes children Savannah (15) and Seth (10) from Brandon’s first marriage, as well as River Rose (2) and Remi (6 months).

And that’s what happily ever after looks like.
