The year was 1992, and for the first time in his already legendary career, George Strait was trying two things for the first time.
The song “Heartland” would be one of George’s biggest hits, but it was different than most of his songs. This one was tied to something other than an album. Technically it was an album, but “Heartland” was the second single from George’s album that also doubled as the soundtrack to the movie “Pure Country.”
While the movie came out in September of 1992, “Heartland” didn’t hit radio until early 1993, long after the movie had left theaters. That was because the first single, “I Cross My Heart,” was also a huge No. 1 hit.
Even though George turned in a stellar performance in his debut acting role, the movie bombed at the box office. The good news is that the album was just the opposite, as the “Pure Country” soundtrack was a smashing success coming in as one of George’s biggest selling of his career.
