Jason Aldean may have some rock edge to a lot of his songs, but the subject matter of his latest single is stone-cold country.
The song’s called “Any Ol’ Barstool,” and it’s a return to the kind of heartbroken anthem he first wowed us with on “The Truth” a few albums back.
Jason thinks “Any Ol’ Barstool” is “one of the best written songs” on his latest album, “They Don’t Know.”
He says, “The guy is just trying to convince her that he’s doing fine. He’s like, ‘I’m doing fine. I’m not drinking too much. I’m not doing all this stuff. Just ask any ‘ol barstool in town.'”
If you’ve lived a little bit of life like Jason has, then you’ve probably been in a situation similar to the one in “Any Ol’ Barstool.”
“It’s one of things we’ve all been through — relationship breakups,” Jason says. “It kind of goes hand-in-hand sometimes. It’s like, you got through hard times, a lot of times people want to go do some drinking to forget about it. That’s country music to me. That’s the country music I grew up on.”
In fact, Jason makes a point to include songs like “Any Ol’ Barstool” when he’s picking new music.
He explains, “I think it’s always cool to have songs like that on the record that are more of a traditional type thing. I grew up listening to a ton of that stuff. I think it’s always important to have a little bit of that on each record.”
It’s that attention to detail with his song selection that helped catapult Jason to the top of the country world. His latest Six String Circus Tour packed venues across the country all year long, and that trek is now up for Tour of the Year at the inaugural, fan-voted Rare Country Awards.
