Trump allegedly referred to the deaf, Academy-award winning actress as “retarded” several times, The Daily Beast reported.

On Friday, Matlin was quick to respond to the reports and issued a statement.

“The term is abhorrent and should never be used,” Matlin wrote in her statement. “The fact that we are talking about this during a very important moment in history has upset me deeply.”

“So, what’s my response? It’s not about insults or taking each other down,” the actress continued. “As a person who is Deaf, as a woman, as a mom, as a wife, as an actor. I have a voice. And I’m using that voice to make myself heard … and vote.”

One source also told The Daily Beast, that Trump was “insulting and mimicking” her because she couldn’t hear.
