Michelle Obama gave her last official speech as first lady on Friday. The speech was billed as a tribute to Terri Tchorzynski, the school counselor of the year. She delivered her speech to guidance counselors from all over the country, each state’s guidance counselor of the year, about the importance of education.

Towards the end of the speech, though, things took an emotional turn for Mrs. Obama as she talked about young people in America. She has focused on youth issues as part of her platform as first lady.
“As I end my time at the White House, I can think of no better message to send to our young people and my last official remarks as first lady. So, for all the young people in this room and all those who are watching – know that this country belongs to you. To all of you,” she said, as she started to become visibly emotional.

She continued, “I want our young people to know that they matter — that they belong. So don’t be afraid. Young people, do you hear me? Don’t be afraid. Be focused. Be empowered. Empower yourselves with a good education.”
