President and Mrs. Obama attended the Kennedy Center Honors on Dec. 4, their last attendance of the event as POTUS and FLOTUS.
While President Obama looked debonair as usual in his tuxedo, all eyes were on Michelle Obama in a striking green and pink Gucci gown.
People were quick to wonder whether her choice of an Italian designer was her way of sending a message.
In fact, as pointed out by Vanessa Friedman in the New York Times, this is the first time the first lady has not worn an American designer’s dress to the event.
Friedman also wondered if the reason for the choice was to show support for Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who announced his resignation after voters rejected his plans for constitutional reform.
While no one can be sure why Mrs. Obama chose this dress for this event, her garment choices are always carefully thought out.
The first lady’s stylist, Meredith Koop, told Harper’s Bazaar earlier this year that Mrs. Obama “always take into account where we are going and that country’s cultural norms. The goal is to pay tribute to each place we visit [while] never losing the spirit of the United States.”
Whatever her reason for choosing the unique green and pink gown, we think she looked absolutely stunning!
