Add marijuana to that list of Thanksgiving Day groceries. If it’s legal in your state, that is.
With California, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada recently joining Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and Washington, D.C. in decriminalizing recreational marijuana, the nearly $20 billon U.S. recreational cannabis market is growing at a quickening rate. Which is why it should come as no real surprise that pot sales are expected to be through the roof during the Thanksgiving season, when delicious munchies abound.
“It looks like people stock up before the holiday on products that are easy to share amongst friends and family,” said Scott Vickers Chief Technology Officer of Headset, a Seattle-based marijuana analytics firm. “These products also allow inconspicuous consumption so could be used to relieve the monotony or tension of some family get-togethers where cannabis is frowned upon.”
According to data analyzed by Headset last year, dispensary marijuana sales increased by 27 percent on the day before Thanksgiving, which Headset refers to as Weed Wednesday. Dispensaries also sold 58 percent more edibles and 72 percent more beverages compared to a typical Wednesday. And this year’s numbers are only expected to increase.
During Black Friday last year, appropriately referred to in the cannabis industry as Green Friday, marijuana sales rose by 13 percent from the average Friday. Cannabis order-ahead service Baker is prediciting “a much more significant bump” this year in marijuana sales.
“In states where adult use is fully legal, like Colorado and Oregon, cannabis promotions around Black Friday have been common,” said Adam Bierman, co-founder of MedMen, a marijuana management consulting firm, “and we expect we’ll see more of that happening as prohibition eases across the country”
