Speaking at forum in his home state of Nevada Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said that Obamacare was “absolutely” the first step toward a government-run health care system.

“Yes, yes. Absolutely, yes,” Reid said according to the Las Vegas Sun.

Reid was asked by panel member Steve Sebelius if single-payer was the eventual goal of Obamacare.

“We had a real good run at the public option…don’t think we didn’t have a tremendous number of people who wanted a single-payer system,” Reid said.

A government-run insurance option — known as the public option — was originally included in Obamacare but was stripped from the final bill after Democrats realized it was hugely unpopular.

Many Obamacare critics have charged that the bill is simply a stalking horse for an eventual government takeover of the health care system, leading to a socialized system.
