Rick Santorum will be on your TV soon

Ex-Senator and two-time Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has announced a new position with CNN, assuming the role of Senior Political Correspondent for the network.

The move was announced today by CNN. Santorum is just one of a number of new additions to the network’s news and political coverage.

Santorum has most recently worked as a lawyer, consultant and organizer for Patriot Voices, his 501(c)4 nonprofit founded in 2012. The organization claims to be a group of “over 100,000 activists” who are “fighting for the cause” of “working families in America.”

As a 501(c)4 “social welfare” organization, like those that supported Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, Patriot Voices does not have to disclose donors or disbursements. Such groups are often referred to as “dark money groups” for their common use in politics; while these organizations are banned from specific political activity, Patriot Voices has claimed explicit political goals from the outset. The group used their first public communication to say, “We support candidates who share our convictions and hold those accountable that serve us in elected office. The defeat of Barack Obama, and those who support his policies, will be our first priority.”

Santorum has been a vocal supporter of the president-elect, appearing at rallies with him.

This is not CNN’s first effort to hire voices they see adding to the “ideological diversity” of the network. Three days after being fired from the Trump campaign, former manager Corey Lewandowski was hired as a CNN commentator. That hiring was more controversial, as Lewandowski had signed a non-disclosure agreement forbidding him from publicly criticizing Trump and was still receiving severance pay from the Trump campaign when he was hired.

Neither CNN nor Santorum has announced a start date.
