The obesity epidemic gripping America hasn’t quite loosened its claws, but new survey data shows some promise. According to the CDC National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, youth obesity rates have leveled off and the rise of adult obesity has slowed.

Among youth, obesity rates have stagnated around 17 percent since 2008.

With this in mind, the experts at HealthGrove, a health research site powered by Graphiq, found the least obese county in every state. Using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they ranked the counties in each state based on the percent of their population between the ages of six and 29 that was obese at the time of most recent data collection (2013). In the case of ties, states with the larger number of obese people ranked higher.

It is important to note that the CDC defines obesity as having a body mass index of 30 or higher. Also, the obesity rates have been age-adjusted to allow for comparisons between counties that have different age demographics.

Only 11.8 percent of individuals are obese in the top ranking county, while 30.1 percent are obese in the 50th ranked county.
