Sheriff Joe Arpaio is taking Donald Trump’s birtherism one step further. The Arizona sherif says he will continue the investigation into President Obama’s birth certificate, despite the Republican presidential candidate backing down from his years long campaign to see Obama’s birth certificate.

“I’m not going to give up, and we’re looking into it,” the sheriff said to the Surprise Tea Party Patriots Tuesday night. “I don’t know how it’s going to turn out.”

“I don’t care where he’s from,” Arpaio insisted. “We are looking at a forged document. Period.”

Arpaio’s comments come after Trump was forced to once and for all say, “President Barack Obama was born in the United States. Period,” despite being the cheerleader for the birther movement which believes he was not born in America, and also putting up money to see the real birth certificate.

“Having successfully obtained President Obama’s birth certificate when others could not, Mr. Trump believes that President Obama was born in the United States,” Trump says on his website.

Trump’s latest position is not fazing Arpaio.

“I know all the politicians say, ‘Sheriff, don’t talk about it,’ ” he continued on the issue. “But how can I back down when we started it? I’m not going to just forget it.”

The investigation team is being led by Mike Zullo, who also spoke to the crowd.

“It’s not going to deter us,” he said of Trump’s recent change on the birtherism issue. “It’s not going to stop us. I am closer than ever.”

Arpaio is known nationally as the sheriff who started racial profiling to hamper illegal immigration in his state. Since then, he’s become a national talking head on issues relating to law enforcement.

He is currently “facing his toughest campaign in his 23 years in office,” the New York Daily News reports.
