Elephants are by far my favorite animal. They aren’t only intelligent, they are emotional creatures capable of empathy and creativity. Because of this, they are one of the few creatures with the ability to make art.

In Thailand, a 4-year-old elephant named Suda has quite a knack for it.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Suda has painted his latest masterpiece which features himself picking a heart flower off a tree. He even finished by signing her name.

Elephants paint from memory, so Suda has been working on this for some time. Amazingly, he’s able to paint elephants far better I can, even down to the shading of the belly. While most elephants would have trouble mastering this, Suda seems to be far more advanced than his fellow pachyderms.

Hopefully abilities like Suda’s will give us a better understanding of these beautiful creatures — and a much deeper respect. Enjoy!
