The man who gruesomely murdered a Virginia family on New Year’s Day 11 years ago is put to death

Death Row inmate Ricky Gray, 39, was put to death Wednesday night by the state of Virginia. Eleven years ago, Gray walked into a family’s home on New Year’s Day and killed two young girls and their parents by slashing their throats and then setting their home ablaze.

Gray reportedly showed no emotion as he was walked into the execution chamber wearing blue jeans and handcuffs. When asked if he had any final words, Gray said: “Nope.”

Gray received the death penalty for the murders of 9-year-old Stella Harvey and her 4-year-old sister Ruby, and their parents Bryan and Kathryn Harvey.

The Harvey family was preparing to host a New Year’s party at their home in Richmond. The front door was left open at the same time Gray and his nephew Ray Dandridge were canvassing the area in search of a home to rob. Court records show Gray and Dandridge tied up the family in the basement and Gray slashed their throats and bashed their heads with a hammer before setting their home on fire.

Gray’s lawyers had requested Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe spare the prisoner’s life, saying his actions were the result of drug use aimed at numbing years of sexual abuse by his older brother when he was a child. Gray said he was on PCP at the time of the murders.

McAuliffe denied the request because he believed Gray received a fair and impartial trial.

Gray’s execution established a measure of closure for the city of Richmond, which was rocked by the gruesome murders.

“I am still incapable of describing what happened in that basement without getting choked up,” Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Herring, who prosecuted Gray, said. “I don’t know if you ever get closure from something like that. I think if you’re lucky, over time you forget, but I don’t know if you ever reach closure.”

In addition, Gray also confessed to participating in the slaying of Ashley Baskerville, 21, her mother Mary Baskerville-Tucker and stepfather Percyell Tucker just days after the Harvey deaths. However, he was not tried in that case.

Baskerville, according to Gray and Dandridge, had served as a lookout for them during the Harvey slayings.

Dandridge pleaded guilty to the Tucker-Baskerville slayings and is serving a life sentence.
