The divorce between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt was apparently a long time coming.

PEOPLE reports that the allegations of child abuse against Pitt weren’t the only thing that drove Jolie away. A source close to the couple revealed that the relationship was crumbling for months.

“Things built and built over time — it wasn’t any one thing,” a source said in this week’s issue (out Friday). “She’s loved this man for several years, and [divorce] is not something you do impulsively.”

An insider close to Pitt also talked about the divorce adding, “There was clearly a breaking point, where she’d just had enough.”

“He may have been broken himself and said he couldn’t go on, and she reacted. This has been difficult for a while,” the insider added.

Pitt is reportedly now under investigation by the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Families after he was allegedly “verbally abusive” and got “physical” with the couple’s six children while on a flight from France to the U.S. The FBI is rumored to be involved in the case.

Jolie filed for divorce on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences. She listed the date of separation as Sept. 15. The alleged incident of abuse happened on Sept. 14. Pitt was reportedly “wrecked” when he heard the news.

“He was appealing to her to do this quietly — not to save the marriage but to consider the well-being of the children — and it was ignored,” a Pitt source said.

Jolie has requested the judge award her physical custody of the children and allow Pitt visitation.

“They have six kids together and are always going to be in each other’s lives,” an insider said.
