Military mom Lt. Col. Cotina Jenkins-Sellers Thursday surprised her 13-year-old son during his middle-school basketball game in San Antonio, Texas.
“I’m nervous because I don’t know what his reaction is going to be,” Lt. Col. Jenkins-Sellers told San Antonio’s KSAT before she snuck on to the basketball court during a staged technical foul.
The veteran said she hadn’t seen her son, Derrick Jenkins, in eight months and, consequently, missed all of football season and the holidays because of her deployment to Kuwait.
The young athlete, after taking the foul shot, turned around at the sound of his mother’s voice, apparently shocked and overwhelmed by her unexpected presence.
“He cried a little bit but that’s OK. That was his natural reaction; that was Derrick. And that’s really the reaction I thought he would have,” she said.
