Picking up the tab for two National Guard soldiers during the government shutdown was a no-brainer for Ruby Tuesday bartender and waitress Sarah Hoidahl, 22, who never expected to be rewarded for her act of kindness.
“It was a regular Wednesday lunch shift and I went in and two women — National Guard, they were in their uniforms and everything — and they came in for lunch and they were trying to decide what to get,” Ms. Hoidahl told Ellen Degeneres while on the Ellen Degeneres Show.
“They were looking through the menu and, you know, they said they were trying to keep it light; they mentioned with the government shutdown that they were furloughed. They’re not getting paid,” she said.
“That just got me thinking.”
The single mother later left a note with the women explaining she had paid the bill, totaling $27.75.
“Thanks to the government shutdown the people like you that protect this country are not getting paid. However I still am. Lunch is on me! Thank you for serving ladies! Have a good day! :)” reads the note.
Host Ellen Degeneres, digging out money from an oversized purse, reimbursed Ms. Hoidahl the cost of the soldiers’ bill before signing over a $10,000 check to the apparently shocked young mother.
