Chris Farley in 1990 had yet to reach the pantheon of success and tragedy he would see as a cast member of Saturday Night Live.
The late actor was then a member of Chicago’s Second City improv group, a theater company that would serve as the training ground of dozens of comedy legends.
In this recently unearthed video, Farley and company work on a sketch about a motivational speaker.
The sketch, titled “Motivation,” would debut almost word for word on SNL several years later.
The Matt Foley character would become one of Farley’s most well-known characters with the first appearance of Foley remembered as a turning point in Farley’s career.
Here Farley is a little thinner, a little more nervous and with a much quicker delivery.
While the two sketches are similar in dialogue, it is unique to see how the tone would eventually evolve over time.
