In 2011, a video surfaced of a group of people laughing outside the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in this video, the guard of the tomb silences the crowd by sternly speaking to them in a decisive manner.
“It is requested that everyone maintains a level of silence and respect,” says the guard. He then begins to walk, resuming his duty.
This video went viral in 2011, garnering a reported 6 million views, although it now stands at 11 million.
The soldiers who serve as guards for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier are awarded the honor after months of intensive training and research. They walk back and forth on the rubber mat that lies in front of the tomb in 21-second intervals and must meet stringent requirements before putting on the uniform. The soldiers who serve at the Tomb have the honor of receiving the second rarest medal in the military, behind the award received for being an astronaut.
It just goes to show that we can get reminders of the people who treat our country’s heroes with respect in a time where people aren’t quite sure about what is appropriate behavior around memorials and tributes to soldiers.
