As part of a small and subdued media blitz for the movie “To Joey With Love,” Rory Feek sat down with a reporter from a television station situated not far from his dear wife’s hometown. Like every other interview before this one, Rory reflected on Joey’s death from cervical cancer and the movie he made to introduce people to her story.

But about halfway through, it was evident that this interview was going to be different. When asked what he missed most about his wife, Rory quietly reflected on his new reality.

“I just miss her companionship,” he began. “I miss Joey being here by my side. I’ve never really had to do an interview without her chair sitting right here.”

And then he paused. And all of a sudden, months of mourning her death seemed to show itself in the tears coming from his eyes. “I don’t really like it,” he said quietly. “But it’s the way that it is.”

Earlier in the interview, Rory was brought to tears when talking about his dear daughter. Indiana, who was born with Down syndrome. “There were some people around us, even Joey’s daddy, who sometimes said ‘could she just get a break?’ Like, you know, why couldn’t she get a break? It didn’t even occur to her that she wasn’t getting one. It really never occurred to me either.”
