Alexis Arquette reportedly died from complications from AIDS.

The transgender actress passed away early Sunday, September 11 and was surrounded by family, including her siblings David, Patricia, Rosanna and Richmond, at the time of her death.

According to a source, Alexis “had been suffering for a long time. She was sick for years. At one point, she wasn’t able to leave the house; she was in bad shape.”

When Alexis was nearing the end of her life, the source revealed that her “whole family rallied around her. And in the end they were always there to support her. Everyone knew [her death] was imminent. It was a matter of time.”


PEOPLE reports that in the days since her passing, the Arquette family “is doing as well as can be expected. They all love Alexis very much.”

Patricia, David and Richmond have all posted tributes to their sister on social media since her untimely death.

“Thank you all for your love and kind words about Alexis,” younger brother David captioned a picture of the two on Twitter. “My hero for eternity.”
