A July Fourth parade float featuring a zombified-looking Barack Obama standing in front of an outhouse labeled “Obama Presidential Library” has made one woman really angry.
“This is not okay,” Glory Kathurima said, watching the Nebraskan crowd laughing and cheering on the float while she and her nine-year-old daughter looked on.
“I’m angry and I’m scared,” she continued. “This float was not just political, this was absolutely a racial statement.”
“The fear came for me from the people laughing at it and pointing at it and basically giving it the stamp of approval,” she added.
The Daily Caller’s Eric Owens noted that this “presidential library” joke already existed eight years ago, when Atlanta Journal-Constitution cartoonist Mike Luckovich drew up a cartoon outhouse with a sign that read: “Bush Presidential Library.”
Parade committee member Rick Konopasek told the Lincoln Journal Star that “[t]his was political satire” and “[i]f we start saying no to certain floats, we might as well not have a parade at all.”
“So should we deny the 95 percent of those that liked it their rights, just for the five percent of people who are upset?” he asked.
Kathurima wasn’t buying the freedom of speech argument, however.
“We are supposed to be celebrating independence but people are quick to forget about 300 years of history,” she said. “My daughter keeps asking me, ‘Why?’ and I don’t have an answer for her.”
