With the new year upon us, many people are motivated (perhaps only briefly) to become healthier versions of themselves. New Year’s resolutions often involve getting an extra workout in at the gym, shedding holiday pounds by eating fewer calories or reaching for an apple rather than a candy bar.

However, some of the items on the shelves in your local grocery stores may be masquerading as healthy when they are anything but. Yogurt, for example, might be more nutritional than sugary breakfast cereal or a pastry because of its high-protein content, but many popular yogurts are packed with processed sugar.

HealthGrove, a health data site by Graphiq, found 15 popular yogurts with more sugar than a regular-sized, 20 gram Snicker’s bar. Using data from the ESHA nutrition database, the experts at HealthGrove ranked these 15 snacks by their sugar content per serving. All of the yogurts on this list are individual serving sizes (between 150g and 230g). Only yogurt brands sold in grocery stores were included (i.e. a yogurt cup from Starbucks or First Watch did not count). Additionally, only one flavor — the one with the most sugar — and one type of yogurt (soy, greek, etc.) from each brand were selected. Ties were broken by total calories per serving.

Yogurt is marketed as a healthy breakfast or snack option, but considering that people should only be eating between 24 and 36 total grams of added sugar per day, you may want to think twice when reaching for one of these sweet snacks.
