Shoppers bought guns so quickly yesterday that the FBI’s background check database could barely keep up.

The number of background checks on Black Friday is expected to exceed 144,000, a new record, according to CNN.

The FBI normally averages about one background check per second on a typical day. Yesterday Americans were gobbling up firearms so quickly that the average soared to about three checks per day.

Inevitably some of those background checks will fail. Officials estimate that about 2 percent of the checks run yesterday won’t be completed because the necessary documents won’t be supplied.
