Walter White and Jesse Pinkman had a legendarily effed-up father-son dynamic. Their chemistry — no pun intended — is what made Breaking Bad one of the best shows in the history of television. But off-screen, the relationship between actors Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul is actually incredibly sweet. In fact, Cranston is the godfather of Paul’s son Ryden!

Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul

Jesse Pinkman was supposed to die. Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan has spoken about his original intent to kill Pinkman off at the end of the first season, the victim of a drug deal gone wrong. But audiences instantly loved Pinkman, thanks to Aaron Paul’s earnest portrayal of the struggling young addict.

So, Pinkman stayed. And his presence continued to define the show. (He even earned his own spin-off movie, El Camino, and appeared in Better Call Saul.) As Walter White transformed from a mild-mannered high school teacher into the meth-making kingpin Heisenberg, it was Jesse Pinkman who brought him back to earth — most of the time.

As White, Bryan Cranston played the ultimate anti-hero: manipulative, ruthless, and sympathetic all at once. And in White’s most terrible moments, his partnership with Jesse was his sole redeeming quality. Their constant ribbing was the comedic highlight of a dark show and when that friendship wavered, fans were crushed.

Luckily, we have the real-life friendship of actors Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul to get us through the drama’s darkest moments. That relationship is a lot healthier. It’s even adorable.

Paul was just 29 years old when he met Cranston on the set of Breaking Bad. By that point, Cranston was veteran comedic actor, best known for his starring role on Malcom in the Middle. Paul was still an up-and-comer. But together, they forged new acting identities on the smash-hit AMC series — and became best friends along the way.

“The moment I met Bryan, I instantly fell in love with the man,” Paul said in his speech when Cranston received his Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2013. “I mean, how could you not? He’s charming, he’s brilliant, and he’s a beautiful human being inside and out who is constantly running around in his underwear making people laugh.” Over the years, he’s also referred to Cranston as his “mentor” and “best friend.”

Aaron Paul’s Growing Family

They even got corresponding Breaking Bad tattoos in 2013 to commemorate the end of the series! In 2019, they also co-released their own line of mezcal, Dos Hombres. Partners for life. They’re also set to co-star in an upcoming Super Bowl ad for the chip brand PopCorners.

So when Paul and his wife Lauren Parsekian had their second child in 2022, son Ryden Caspian Paul, Cranston was the natural choice for godfather. He called Cranston on his birthday to bestow him with the honor.

In 2012, Aaron Paul became engaged to Lauren Parsekian, who directed the 2011 documentary Finding Kind. The following year, they married in Malibu with a 1920s-Parisian-themed wedding. In 2018, they had their first child together, Story Annabelle Paul, and in 2022, Ryden Caspian Paul was born.
