Sci-fi fans are famously obsessed with minutiae about their favorite franchises — and the actors and creators behind them. But most Star Trek and X-Men aficionados probably don’t know a certain major detail about Sir Patrick Stewart’s life.

But there’s a major detail about Captain Pickard, Professor X — however else you want to refer to Patrick Stewart —that even hard-core fans might not know. There is a 39-year age gap between the legendary actor and his wife Sunny Ozell.

Given that Stewart is 82 years old, that means Ozell is … 121? Just kidding, of course. She is 43 years old.

Anyhow, let’s take a look at Stewart’s professional career — an abridged version, of course — as well as his wife and family.

Patrick Stewart: A Legend Among Legends

Stewart began acting in 1959 with a role in a theatrical production of Cyrano de Bergerac in Bristol, England. After eventually debuting on TV in 1967 via Coronation Street, he alternated between theater and the small screen for decades. He continues to perform in both mediums.

To give Stewart’s career some context, when he began playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987, the Los Angeles Times referred to Stewart as “an unknown British Shakespearean actor.” He went on to become the actor most familiar with Star Trek and some of its TV spinoffs and films.

Thirty-five years later, Picard isn’t the only role of which Stewart is having trouble letting go. Nor is it the only sci-fi franchise. Earlier this year, he shocked superhero fans by returning as X-Men guru Professor Xavier. The wheelchair-bound genius briefly appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The number of credits that Patrick Stewart collected over the course of his 60-year career is practically impossible to calculate.

Surprisingly, Stewart hasn’t ever landed an Academy Award — or even a nomination for one. Nor does he have any trophies from the Emmy, Screen Actors Guild, Tonys, or Golden Globes. That’s borderline criminal. Perhaps amusingly, Stewart’s biggest win was a Grammy Award in 1996 for Best Spoken Word Album for Children (Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf).

With that said, Stewart would probably say his biggest prize is Sunny Ozell.

Sunny Ozell Blazed Her Own Trail to Success

Born in Reno, Nevada, singer/songwriter Sunny Ozell started learning how to play music at a mere 4 years old, Songwriting Magazine reported in August 2015. Her parents had her trained to play violin and, when she hit age 11, they got her involved with learning how to sing too.

Later in life — her teen years — Ozell played in opera companies. She played in a blues band in college and then in jazz clubs in New York.

The vocalist, composer, and performer released her debut album in 2015. Take It With Me consisted mostly of cover songs by Ray Charles, Tom Waits, and Hank Williams. That range of artists reflects Ozell’s music, which touches on just about all the major music genres in the U.S.: pop, country, jazz, Americana, and blues.

Ozell put out her second record, Overnight Lows, in early 2020.

Ozell makes no secret about her marriage to Sir Patrick Stewart; in fact, the bio on her website mentions it.

Ozell is Stewart’s third wife. In September, the spouses will celebrate 10 years of marriage.

Stewart previously wedded Sheila Falconer in 1966, and they divorced inn 1990. Ten years later, he married TV and film producer Wendy Neuss, but that marriage only lasted three years.

That’s far less than Stewart and Ozell’s time together as husband and wife.

Ian McKellen — who played Magneto, the arch-rival of Stewart’s Professor X — officiated the wedding, according to New York. (The article is behind a paywall.)

The native of Reno, Nevada calls New York home, but Ozell and her husband Sir Patrick Stewart now divide their time between Brooklyn and Los Angeles,” Ozell’s bio says.

Stewart likely owns homes in California and New York because his career, remarkably, still endures.
