Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are surrounded by more tabloids and gossip than just about anyone on the planet. But the latest debunked rumor involving the Sussexes is just plain lame.

Media outlets on Thursday breathlessly reported that Harry and Meghan had booked an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The problem with that reporting? It was based on unconfirmed rumors and turned out to be untrue.

Vanity Fair reported that the appearance isn’t happening. The outlet further noted that the rumors began due to a curious post on The Tonight Show‘s Twitter account on Wednesday.

Apparently, a lot of people interpreted the crown emoji as signifying the royal couple. You can probably figure out the rest, even if you’re only vaguely familiar with social media.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Doc Starts Streaming

There are lots of reasons Harry and Meghan would appear on The Tonight Show.

Last week, Netflix released a teaser for a new series revolving around the two. It racked up 7.6 million views in its first week on the Internet.

Then, three days ago, the streaming service followed up with a proper trailer for the docuseries. Running a little over one minute, it’s actually almost exactly the same length as the teaser. This time, however, Netflix actually announced the release date of the program.

Yesterday, Netflix unveiled the first part of the series, which it’s calling Volume One. In exactly one week, Volume II will premiere. Four more segments will air after that, at dates that are yet to be announced.

The description accompanying the trailer gave a much clearer view of what the project is all about.

“In an unprecedented and in-depth documentary series, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex share the other side of their high-profile love story,” Netflix stated. “The series explores the clandestine days of their early courtship and the challenges that led to them feeling forced to step back from their full-time roles in the institution.”

The description further noted that Liz Garbus directed and executive produced the docuseries. She won the best feature documentary Academy Award in 1999 for The Farm: Angola, USA; and in 2016 for What Happened, Miss Simone?

Netflix’s statement continued: “With commentary from friends and family, most of whom have never spoken publicly before about what they witnessed, and historians who discuss the state of the British Commonwealth today and the royal family’s relationship with the press, the series does more than illuminate one couple’s love story, it paints a picture of our world and how we treat each other. … Harry & Meghan is a never-before-seen look at one of the most-discussed couples in history.”
