Toni Collette’s Children: Balancing Career and Parenthood

Three weeks ago, eclectic actress Toni Collette and her longtime rock musician husband, David Galafassi, confirmed their breakup on Instagram. It came as a surprise to those close to the couple — but even more so to those who didn’t even know Collette was married.

People noted in its coverage about the couple’s breakup that they split as photos of Galafassi kissing another woman made the rounds.

Along with the announcement about their breakup, Collette and Galafassi all but said outright that they plan to co-parent their kids.

Here is an overview of Collette’s professional and personal lives, and where they have occasionally intersected.

Toni Collette’s Career

The prolific actress started her career about 32 years ago, making her onscreen debut with the Australian comedy/drama Spotswood in 1992. 

Collette’s career is as wide-ranging as they come. Her top credits include the new horror classic Hereditary, an Emmy-winning lead role in the Showtime dramedy United States of Tara, and a Tony-nominated part in The Wild Party on Broadway in 2000.

Collette broke out with the title role in Muriel’s Wedding in 1994. She played the nervous mom in The Sixth Sense (1999), About a Boy (2002), Little Miss Sunshine (2006), Fright Night (2011), and Krampus (2015).

Most recently, Collette starred alongside Anna Faris in the bomb The Estate, playing sisters who vie for the inheritance belonging to their aunt.

Toni Collette’s Love Life

Toni Collette made some tabloid headlines due to her yearlong relationship with Velvet Goldmine co-star Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the late 1990s.

She married Dave Galafassi in January 2003. After 20 years married, they announced their divorce in a joint statement they posted on Instagram earlier this month.

“After a substantial period of separation, it is with grace and gratitude that we announce we are divorcing,” the statement said. “We’re united in our decision and part with continuing respect and care for each other.”

They continued: “Our kids are of paramount importance to us and we will continue to thrive as a family, albeit in a different shape. We’re thankful for the space and love you grant us as we evolve and move through this transition peacefully. Big thanks. Toni Collette and David Galafassi.”

Those two children are Sage Florence and Arlo Robert.

Collette and Galafassi’s daughter, Sage Florence, is 14 years old, according to People. They welcomed her in January 2008 after saying the previous summer that Collette was pregnant.

Collette and Galafassi’s son, Arlo Robert, was born in April 2011, In Touch reported in a new article about Collette’s romantic life. 

“I’ve never had a plan and I still don’t,” Collette told Time about her two kids in June 2018. “I’m talking around the idea of directing, and just happy being a mom and spending time with my kids. We’re planning a road trip this summer.”

Don’t expect Collette to get more forthcoming about her personal life.
