1 Dead, 1 Hurt During Shooting at Texas High School

One student was tragically killed and another was wounded during a shooting that took place on Monday at a high school in Texas. According to authorities, officers responded to Lamar High School campus located in Arlington where they found a male student with a gunshot wound and a female student who was grazed by gunfire. Arlington Police Department stated the incident occurred just before 7 am.

The victims have yet to be identified but were taken to a nearby hospital where the boy was pronounced dead. Police stated the girl is expected to survive. At the scene, authorities arrested a male juvenile suspect and has been charged with one count of capital murder. Police have yet to confirm whether the shooter was a student or not, but is currently being held at the Tarrant County Juvenile Center. 

“The suspect never entered the school building and ran from the campus immediately after firing the shots,” police said via a press release, saying that the shooter was taken into custody without incident after several witnesses gave his description to 911 dispatchers.

Investigators also revealed they found a gun they believe was used during the shooting. The school was quickly placed under lockdown while police searched for the suspect, with children reuniting with their parents around 11 a.m.

Superintendent Marcelo Cavoz told The Associated Press that classes were canceled the following day, but counselors were available to staff and students on Wednesday. “We, as a community, cannot tolerate this kind of violence,” Arlington Police Chief Al Jones stated. 

“We need gun owners to be responsible and to properly secure their firearms, so they don’t end up on our school campuses. We will continue to work in lock step with our partners at Arlington ISD to ensure our schools are safe spaces where students can learn.”

“Our thoughts are with the affected students, their families and the entire Lamar High School community today in light of this unnecessary violence,” Arlington Mayor Jim Ross stated.
