The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. and the victim who died did so overnight during surgery. The other victims were in stable condition as of early Monday morning.

Police have released a motive for the shooting.

“We don’t know what happened prior to that, but we did hear gunshots and our officers responded as well as other agencies very quickly,” NOPD Deputy Chief Hans Ganthier said at the scene, via NOLA.com.

A witness told WWL-TV she heard between 12-15 shots before everyone began to flee. The parade paused briefly after the shooting.

“This is really not something we wanted to see,” Ganthier said. “We really wanted this to be a safe Mardi Gras and we continue to work toward that end.”
