Steady Recovery

The educator sat down with TODAY show co-host Savannah Guthrie to talk about the experience. “I’ve been doing okay. It’s been challenging. I’ve gone through a lot of obstacles and challenges. Some days are not-so-good days, where I can’t get up out of bed. Some days are better than others, where I’m able to get out of bed and make it to my appointments.”

Zwerner has chosen to remain optimistic while continuing to recover from the traumatic ordeal. “But for going through what I’ve gone through, I try to stay positive. You know, try to have a positive outlook on what’s happened and where my future’s heading.”

During the initial incident, several warnings were shared about the young boy having a gun on campus. The information came from both teachers and students, but administrators failed to do anything about it. The shots fired by the boy left Zwerner with life-threatening injuries.

Initial Findings

Hours after the incident occurred, the Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew released a statement to the press. “The individual is a 6-year-old student. He is right now in police custody. We have been in contact with our commonwealth attorney and some other entities to help us best get services to this young man.”

“We’ll get the investigation done,” Drew continued, “There’s questions we’ll want to ask and find out about. I want to know where that firearm came from, what was the situation.”

“This was not an accidental shooting,” he said.

  1. I think the administration should be held accountable. Curious as to why the child felt that he had no other recourse for whatever he was dealing with and what he was exposed to regularly at home, if he had one. What was the actual relationship the teacher had with her students and their parents…. that one in particular. You know, the whole story.
