During an interview with NBC on Monday morning, entertainer Richard Simmons told Savannah Guthrie from TODAY that he is not being held against his will in his Los Angeles mansion, despite recent reports to the contrary.

“No one is holding me in my house as a hostage,” Simmons says in his first interview audio interview since December 2013.

Simmons appeared on the show after a report in the New York Daily News quoted many of Richard’s longtime friends who believed that Simmons had fallen out of public eye due to some sort of internal scandal within his camp.

After a very active public life, Simmons has not been appeared outside his home in several years and has cut off contact with many friends.

“You know, I do what I want to do as I’ve always done, so people should sort of just believe what I have to say because like I’m Richard Simmons!” he said.

According to Simmons, he suffered some injuries, and after years of teaching the world his famous exercise classes, he simply wanted a break.

“For all the people that were worrying about me, I want to tell them that I love them with my whole heart and soul and that not to worry, Richard’s fine,” Simmons explains. “You haven’t seen the last of me. I’ll come back, and I’ll come back strong.
