Actor Danny De Vito gave an interview to the Associated Press this week where he very solemnly declared that the current political climate in the United States had led to the country being filled with a “bunch of racists.”
De Vito was responding to a question about the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences failing to nominate a person of color for an acting award for the second year in a row.
In the weeks since the nomination were announced, many within an outside the film industry have criticized their industry for not recognizing the work of actors of color.
“It’s unfortunate that the entire country is a racist country. So it’s an example of the fact that even though some great people have given some great performances in movies, they weren’t even thought about,” De Vito said.

“We are living in a country that discriminates and has certain racist tendencies. So sometimes it manifests itself in stuff like [the Oscars] and it’s illuminated. But just generally speaking, we’re a bunch of racists.”
The famed 71-year-old actor was nominated for on Oscar once as a producer for 1999’s “Erin Brockovich.”
