In December 2011, pop singer Miley Cyrus joined CNN’s annual tribute to men and women around the country who deserve recognition with an amazing performance of one of her biggest songs.

Cyrus’ appearance at the CNN Heroes: An All Star Tribute event saw her perform “The Climb,” a song she’d originally recorded two years earlier for the soundtrack to her feature film debut as Hannah Montana.

Cyrus dazzled in blue during the performance, which put her vocal range front and center with only a sparse accompaniment from a backing band.

A year and a half later, Cyrus would return to the public eye with her smash single “We Can’t Stop” and break free from all of the politically correct ties she had been held down by as a teen performer.
