Steve McQueen and Yul Brynner wouldn’t believe that there is a new “Magnificent Seven” movie

In 1960, Steve McQueen and Yul Brynner starred in “The Magnificent Seven,” a classic remake of “Seven Samurai,” a 1954 film by Akira Kurasowa. At the time, the film was hailed as a brilliant homage to its Japanese counterpart and helped make Steve McQueen a financially viable movie star.

Fast forward 56 years and Hollywood has decided that decades after Brynner and McQueen passed away their iconic characters should be reborn.

Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt fill in for the late McQueen and Brynner in the first trailer for the 2016 remake of the 1960 classic.

Despite its current classic status, the first remake wasn’t received favorably by many outlets in 1960.

“Even with some highly fetching Mexican scenery in color, this United Artists release, thrusting Yul Brynner well to the fore, is a pallid, pretentious and overlong reflection of the Japanese original,” The New York Times reported at the time.

With that in mind, let’s hope the next one isn’t as poorly received.
