The Plunge

In proper social media fashion, TikTok has sanctioned yet another viral challenge that is more frigid than any ice bucket and with a bit more kick than a spoonful of raw cinnamon. Participants are quite literally throwing their own bodies off of makeshift diving boards and plummeting into the ocean.

No dive technique, no protective gear, just hype-howling and slipshod belly flops leaving the skin a bit tender and onlookers in a heightened uproar of excited cheers.

Supporters have taken to the comment sections of these videos, cheering the daredevils to higher peaks and more complex ways to careen into the water below.

“Wild cats,” one user commented, praising the series of jumps several contestants made at a death diving competition in Oslo, Norway.

Some of the jumps are leaving viewers quite curious as the tricksters fearlessly jump into icy rivers and natural cave pools. “I would be terrified of what’s underneath,” one comment read.

Starting Young

A viral challenge wouldn’t be complete without its fair share of naysayers, seemingly-concerned bystanders, and outright haters. Several death-diving videos have been flooded with comments disapproving of the stunt. Especially the ones where the jumper is a young child.

“Very dangerous,” “Parental guidance needed,” “I can feel the pain through the screen.” Comments like this and several more have sparked a typical discourse between viewers. Some of them are even admonishing the professional cameramen at these events, saying that they have no business filming young divers performing this quite dangerous and potentially fatal stunt.

Even still, the views continue to rise as tricksters continue to fall several feet into the water for what they believe to be the thrill of a lifetime.

If you consider yourself an adrenaline junkie, it may be time to step up your game. Will you be taking a death dive anytime soon?
