The cause of death was announced by police, bringing an end to the multiple theories on social media.

“The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office performed a post-mortem examination and determined that Mary Mara’s manner of death was an accident, due to asphyxiation, and water drowning,” says an updated statement provided by a New York State Police Troop D spokesperson. “The investigation is continuing.”

Police do not suspect foul play.

Mara was swimming in the river near her sister’s house in Cape Vincent, N.Y., Sunday morning when she died. An autopsy must still be performed before determining the exact cause of death.

TMZ reported that Mara’s death may have involved blunt head trauma.

“Mary’s rep Craig Dorfman tells TMZ … investigators informed her family about new evidence … that she may have died after slipping and hitting her head following her swim,” TMZ wrote.

Mara had “face abrasions,” when her body was recovered, TMZ added. Local authorities did not mention any such injuries in their statement.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be involved in Mara’s fatal accident, Dorfman told TMZ.
