What Happened to Jared from Subway?

Once upon a time, Jared Fogle and his giant jeans were just a fun marketing ploy. It was a simpler era, full of $5 footlongs, and Jared was the face of it all, serving as the Subway’s grinning spokesman for 15 years. But behind that smile, Fogle harbored a dark secret. In 2015, he went from being a multi-millionaire to a convicted pedophile sex offender.

So, where is he now?

Jared Fogle

Jared Fogle was born and raised in Indianapolis and, like so many Hoosiers, headed off to Indiana University after high school. But his college experience was anything but typical. During his years there, Fogle struggled with his weight, at one point weighing 425 pounds. So in 1998, around age 21, he decided to change his unhealthy diet.

Fogle began eating exclusively at Subway, ordering one small turkey sub and one large veggie sub each day for a total of, roughly, 2,000 daily calories. By 1999, Fogle had lost 245 pounds — and it didn’t take long for Subway to pounce on the marketing opportunity.

After hearing Fogle’s story, a midwest Subway franchisee connected Fogle with a Chicago advertising agency and before long, Fogle had an official sponsorship with the brand. Beginning in 2000, he was hired to advertise with Subway and, in all, was featured in over 300 commercials for the sandwich chain — usually toting old pairs of massive pants.

There’s no doubt about it, Fogle made for some memorable TV. And it wasn’t long before the regular Joe became a celebrity in his own right. Fogle began making all kinds of media cameos and, in 2004, founded his own charity, the Jared Foundation, which aimed to raise awareness about childhood obesity.

Now, of course, the idea of Fogle interacting with children is sickening. It was his Jared Foundation director, Russell Taylor, who was first convicted on child-related sex charges in 2015. And it did not take long before Fogle, too, was implicated.

Fogle’s Fall From Grace

Jared Fogle first attracted the attention of the FBI in 2007 after the Rochelle Herman-Walrond reported him for making lewd comments about tween girls. Herman-Walrond had crossed paths with Fogle at a middle school health event, and she was immediately concerned. At the FBI’s behest, Herman-Walrond went on to continue a fake friendship with Fogle, secretly recording their conversations for the ongoing investigation.

However, the FBI did not have enough of a case to arrest Fogle until 2015, when his colleague Russell Taylor was caught with child pornography. Taylor had explicit pictures and videos of children — some as young as six — and there was clear evidence that he traded these with Fogle. Taylor was arrested on charges of child exploitation, possession of child pornography, and voyeurism and, soon after, Fogle was arrested too.

On August 19, 2015, Fogle pleaded with child sex tourism and possession of child pornography. He was sentenced to 15 years and 8 months in federal prison. Fogle’s associate Taylor was sentenced to 27 years in federal prison and attempted suicide.

Jared Today

The amount that Jared Fogle helped Subway earn is untold. But as of 2013, his own net worth was $15 million. However, when Fogle’s crimes became public, his wife Kathleen McLaughlin left him — and Fogle lost a lot in the divorce. He shares two children with McLaughlin, a son and a daughter, and was ordered to pay her $7 million. Additionally, Fogle was ordered to pay a total of $1.4 million in restitution to his victims.

Upon his sentencing, Jared Fogle’s lawyers recommended that he serve his time at Federal Correctional Institution, Englewood in Colorado, because it has a program for sex offenders. And eventually, that is where Fogle ended up. His earliest possible release date is March 24, 2029.

For years, not much was known about Fogle’s life behind bars. In 2016, was assaulted by a fellow prisoner, Steven Nigg, who was then transferred. But in 2021, Fogle wrote an open letter to the New York Post about his experience. In it, Fogle said he “royally screwed up,” quoted The Shawshank Redemption, and boasted about his prison workout routine. Whatever, Jared!
