The duo sang the song impromptu on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Thursday. Additionally, Parton revealed how she heard Whitney Houston’s cover of the song for the first time, according to People.

Parton said Kevin Costner — Houston’s costar in The Bodyguard, the film in which Houston sang the song — called to ask if they could use the track for the movie.

“I didn’t hear anything else about it,” Parton said. “I didn’t know if they had it, I didn’t know if they had done it.”

Incidentally, Parton told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live! earlier this year that she wishes she had sung “I Will Always Love You” with Houston before she died.

“I would’ve loved that, but I don’t think I could come up to snuff with her though,” Parton said. “She would’ve out-sung me on that one for sure.”

Parton wrote and originally recorded the song in 1973. In June of the following year, the song topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

Parton re-recorded the song or the soundtrack to The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. That version of the track claimed the same chart position as the original in October 1982.

And then, 10 years later, Houston’s soul-ballad recording of the “I Will Always Love You” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks. That amount of time marked a record at the time.

Kelly Clarkson and Dolly Parton’s Previous Pairing

Earlier this year, Parton and Clarkson teamed for a new version of Parton’s movie theme song “9 to 5.” The collaboration preceded the release of the recent documentary Still Working 9 to 5.

Kelly Clarkson hailed Dolly Parton in an Instagram post timed with the release of the new song.

“It’s out!!” Clarkson exclaimed. “The brand new version of ‘9 to 5’ that I recorded with @DollyParton is available everywhere! It was such an honor to join Dolly on this record and I am so happy with how it turned out. I hope y’all love it too❤️.”
