Kim Kardashian turned heads on the red carpet at this year’s Met Gala in Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress. She reportedly only wore the dress on the red carpet, changing into a replica for the actual event.

The reality star and entrepreneur is now being accused of permanently damaging the iconic dress, which was lent to her for the event by its owner Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum in Hollywood. Collector Scott Fortner made the accusations after visiting the museum and looking at the dress on June 12.

Fortner, who assists in authenticating and verifying Marilyn Monroe memorabilia, claims that the dress now has rips and tears down the back with crystals missing. He says other crystals are “literally hanging on by threads.”

Fortner made the allegations of damage in a blog post

Fortner made the allegations of damage in a blog post on the website The Marilyn Monroe Collection and shared several posts on the Instagram page for the site that show the alleged damages.

Fortner made it clear that he doesn’t blame Kim Kardashian for the damages

Fortner made it clear that he doesn’t blame Kim Kardashian for the damages, but places the blame on the folks at the Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum in Hollywood for allowing her to borrow the dress.

“Since breaking the news about the current state of Marilyn’s Happy Birthday, Mr. President dress following Ripley’s allowing it to be worn by Kim K. to the 2022 Met Gala, I’m seeing a number of inaccuracies online, which I’d like to clear up.”

“First, I blame Ripley’s, as they allowed the dress to be worn. I feel that any and every celebrity offered a chance to wear this garment very likely would jump at the opportunity. It’s the most famous dress in the world, worn by one of the most famous women in the world. There’s a reason someone would want to wear it. Kim K. just happened to be the one who got to do it.”

Julien’s Auctions sold Marilyn Monroe’s iconic skintight “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress in 2016 for $4.8 million, a record for any dress sold at auction. It topped another one of Monroe’s dresses to take the crown as the most expensive dress ever sold at auction. Monroe’s white costume from The Seven Year Itch sold for $4.6 million back in 2011.

Update: Ripley’s responded to claims that Kim Kardashian damaged the “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress. Part of their response reads:

Kim Kardashian wearing the “Happy Birthday” dress has been hotly contested, but the fact remains that she did not, in any way, damage the garment in the short amount of time it was worn at the Met Gala.

“From the bottom of the Met steps, where Kim got into the dress, to the top where it was returned, the dress was in the same condition it started in,” noted Ripley’s VP of Publishing and Licensing, Amanda Joiner, who was continuously with the dress the day of the Gala and during transport from Orlando to New York.

  1. Of course she ruined the dress. No way could her enhanced body fit into Monroe’s dress. She has a huge hinny and her bust is bigger. How she even got in the dress is beyond wonders.
