Police say they arrested Officer Marcus Ryans of the Houston Police Department early Monday morning while off-duty after a passer-by noticed him asleep at the wheel.

They also arrested Officer Michael Gebert of the Pearland Police Department Saturday for driving while intoxicated, reportedly on-duty, in uniform and driving his cruiser at the time of the apprehension.

Records show fellow police found Officer Ryans in his car on the 8000 block of South Loop East.

The car, sitting in a moving lane of traffic, contained the public servant quite literally asleep at the wheel.

After his arrest, he received a $500 bond and is currently placed on paid administrative leave.

Ray Hunt, President of the Houston Police Officers Union, told a local TV station the union would not be providing Ryans with an attorney to fight the charges, since the incident occurred while he was off-duty.

However, he also said Ryans may be able to keep his job:

“On a first DWI if there is no accident involved, they can get pretrial diversion. With pretrial diversion there would be no criminal conviction. Without a criminal conviction, their chances of him keeping his job is very good,” Hunt said in an interview.

In a similar incident just days earlier, records show authorities arrested Pearland Police Officer Michael Gebert, charged with drunk driving while in his patrol cruiser.

A press release from the Pearland Police Department confirmed Gebert “was in uniform and driving a department patrol vehicle at the time of the incident.”

“I am disappointed one of our officers is the subject of a criminal investigation,” Pearland Chief of Police Johnny Spires provided in the written statement. “I can assure the citizens we will conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations, keeping in mind the officer is entitled to the same due process as any other citizen.”
