Is John Cornyn trying to make the leap from the no. 2 U.S. Senate Republican and senior member from Texas to bigger, better things at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW in D.C.?

He’s been all over the news lately; and preserving relations with Mexico in these very uncertain times seems to be at the top of his list.
Texas Monthly recently reprinted an opinion piece from Politico he wrote on how the Texas economy is largely dependent on our dealings with Mexico.
“As our largest export market, Mexico has an extraordinary economic relationship with Texas. Trade with our southern neighbor supports hundreds of thousands of jobs in my state and provides more goods at a better price for Texas families. More than a third of all Texas merchandise is exported to Mexico—meaning our farmers, ranchers and small businesses have found no shortage of customers south of the border too,” Cornyn wrote.
They should have sent John Cornyn instead of that poet.
Throughout the opinion, the Senator also expresses his strong support for trade pacts, like NAFTA, but recognizes room for enhancements to the existing deals that make trade “freer and fairer,” as well as improving border issues.
“As the administration and Congress look to improve existing trade deals, such as NAFTA, we would also be wise to focus on strengthening the Southern border. The president has made no secret of rightly prioritizing our country’s safety. Securing the border is an essential part of that equation.”
This guy is good; supporting free trade while vaguely hinting at his support for a border wall to maintain the ultra red base that elects him every six years and adores Trump? Talk about a hat trick.

In all actuality, Cornyn has openly opposed the great wall de México, pero the future is uncertain, and reneging is quickly becoming a fundamental facet of the current Administration’s policies – an epidemic none of us may be safe from – especially Republicans who may be more susceptible to harmful trickle down effects.
Maybe John will throw his 10-gallon hat into the ring in 2020. We’d do well with someone who knows how to legislate, understands the nationwide affects of trade relations first hand after a seasoned and respected career in the Senate, is from Texas, etc., etc.
