7 Deaths Reported From Texas Ice Storm, Over 400K Left Without Power

Authorities have stated that seven people have reportedly died from an ice storm that hit Texas causing more than 400,000 powder outages across the state. The Weather Channel had previously reported that the storm caused dangerous icy road conditions which made vehicles to slide on the ice.

A 49-year-old woman was tragically killed on Monday when she lost control of her pickup truck and hit a tree due to icy roads. A 45-year-old man died after he was thrown from his car after losing control on an overpass.

Another person was killed in a 10-car pile-up in Austin, Texas on Tuesday. Three men also died on Wednesday after the vehicle crashed on an icy road. The storm caused all travel to freeze in the area. More than 250 flights, which equals almost 30%, were canceled on Thursday from Dallas-Fort Worth International airport, according to FlightAware.

Over 400K Left Without Power

3/4 of flights from Dallas were canceled on Wednesday and more than 60% were canceled on Tuesday. Power outages have also risen across the state over the course of this week. Most of the outages have been in counties located in Central and Eastern Texas, according to PowerOutage.US. 

Almost a quarter of all households located in Austin, Texas, had lost power as of Wednesday afternoon as a storm froze and took down power lines. Authorities say that the number did start to drop later in the day.  According to The Weather Channel, Texas utility CPS Energy stated on Wednesday that outages are likely to continue until potentially Thursday when temperatures would begin to rise.

 The Texas Department of Transportation has warned residents to stay off roads if they don’t need to drive and to be wary of traffic lights that have lost power. Slippery roads were also reported in states such as Tennessee and Arkansas.
