Elon Musk Lays Off Over 50 Twitter Employees, Including Senior Staff

At least 50 additional Twitter employees were affected in the latest round of job cuts since Elon Musk‘s purchase of the company for $44 billion last year. The lay-offs, which occurred on Saturday, primarily affected several engineering teams, such as those involved in advertising technology, the primary Twitter application, and the digital infrastructure that sustains the social media giant’s systems.

The layoffs mark the eighth or more round of dismissals since Musk took control, according to Reuters. Among those let go was Martijn de Kuijper, a senior product manager who oversaw a Dutch start-up, Revue, which Twitter acquired for an undisclosed sum in January 2021.

“Waking up to find I’ve been locked out of my email. Looks like I’m let go. Now my Revue journey is really over,” de Kuijper tweeted after the layouts.

Revue, which Twitter acquired, continued to operate independently after the purchase, but it was recently shut down on February 18th. The company posted a message on its website, stating that the decision was “difficult.”

Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in October, advertisers have scaled back or ceased spending on the platform. Musk, who identifies as a “free speech absolutist,” reinstated controversial users, including former President Donald Trump. Additionally, he hired independent journalists to investigate Twitter’s internal records and reveal past “free speech suppression” through an ongoing series called “Twitter Files.”

In a tweet earlier this month, Musk, who has an estimated net worth of $190.8 billion and is the world’s second-richest person, claimed to have saved Twitter “from bankruptcy” and stated that the company is “now trending to breakeven” after three “extremely tough months.”

According to The Wall Street Journal, Twitter had faced at least nine lawsuits seeking over $14 million in damages and interest prior to Musk’s acquisition of the platform, Musk made light of the company’s financial struggles last week.

“Say what you want about me, but I acquired the world’s largest non-profit for $44B lol,” he tweeted.
