New York City is currently trying to stay warm after several airports recorded record-low temperatures, Central Park reached single digits and Bryant Park’s iconic water fountain froze. John F. Kennedy airport located in Queens reached a record low 4 degrees, breaking the old record for the same date back in 1996, according to Fox Weather meteorologist Christopher Tate.  LaGuardia and Newark airports both reached 5 degrees, breaking previous low records back in 1996 of 10 degrees and 7 degrees, respectively.

According to Tate, Central Park thermometer dropped to 4 degrees at 7:00 a.m., which neared a record low for the same date of 0 back in 1918. “This arctic blast certainly means business,” Tate stated. “We’re certainly off to a very chilly start to the weekend here in the city.”

New York Faces Record-Breaking Weather

He went on to tell New Yorkers to bundle up as frostbite can expose skin developing within 20 minutes under the arctic-like conditions. Luckily, the frigid weather is expected to be short-lived, with temperatures expected to rise by late Saturday and go as high as 50 degrees on Sunday.

The cold weather comes weeks after record-high monthly temperatures were recorded in Central Park. Despite it being cold in the big apple, New Hampshire’s Mount Washington broke records early Saturday at 4:30 a.m. as weather dipped minus 108 degrees, according to the Mount Washington observatory.

Mt. Washington Weather Breaks Record

The temperature broke the previous record for the coldest wind chill ever recorded in the United States, which was minus 105 degrees set on February 16, 2014, in Howard Pass, Alaska, according to Tate.

Known for having some of the worst weather, Mount Washington saw temperatures dive -47 degrees on Saturday morning, tying with a previously low temperature in January 1934.
